Fit tips

Stairs: Once shunned in favor of elevators or escalators, stairs have become a new best friend. Starting cautiously, stairs were incorporated more frequently into daily routine. Now, when time permits, fourth floor rest rooms are used in preference to the ground floor facilities. 66 steps and a lot of huffing initially has slowly been replaced with a slight rise in heart rate which quickly subsides.

Shopping: At one time the domain of my wife, grocery shopping has become another exercise opportunity. Car is parked about as far away from the store entrance. Trolley is only used when a basket is impractical. All aisles are visited at least once and when time permits sometimes twice. Shopping has become somewhat easier since food locations have become somewhat familiar but more importantly, especially when it’s winter or hot summer, shopping has become part of my fitness regime.

Walking: Lunchtime walks, weather permitting, has become a staple when at work. Identify a route that takes about 20 minutes, includes either hill or stairs or both, and walk briskly enough to elevate the heart rate.
